Piping Trades: Plumber
As long as people have indoor plumbing, skilled plumbers will always be in demand.
Plumbers install, remodel and maintain systems that carry water, steam, air and other liquids or gases necessary for sanitation, industrial production, heating, air conditioning and many other systems. Because they work in all kinds of industries, there are nearly endless work opportunities. On a typical construction job, they do the “roughing in” after the frame and roof of a new building are in place.

Responsibilities
- Read blueprints & specifications to determine plumbing layout
- Locate, mark, join and secure pipe sections
- Cut holes in walls & floors to accommodate pipe
- Measure, cut, thread and bend pipes to required shape & size
- Install, test, repair and maintain plumbing fixtures & systems
- Assemble and install valves & fittings
- Install underground storm, sanitary & water piping systems

- Strong communication, reading and numeracy and problem-solving
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints
- Ability to work in high places
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment
- Experience using precision tools & machinery
Entrance Requirements
To potentially reduce length of apprenticeship term: Completed courses of study, insulator-related work experience or a related journeyperson certificate AND employer’s recommendation.
To apply for a Prior Learning Assessment: Previous training/work experience in the trade AND desire to determine level of skill & knowledge or advanced standing in an apprenticeship program.
Apprenticeship Program:
4 years, includes technical training, 1,500 hours on-the-job training, and exam. Journeyperson certificate awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn.
